Structure and Magnetic Properties of a New 1D Nickel(II) Hydroxythiophenedicarboxylate

Abstract: The new carboxylato‐bridged NiII network {Ni3(μ3‐OH)2[(κ1‐κ1)‐(κ1‐κ1)‐μ4tdc]2(H2O)4}n (H2tdc = 2,5‐thiophenedicarboxylic acid) has been synthesized hydrothermally. The structure has been characterized by synchrotron powder X‐ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, IR and UV/Vis spectroscopy. The title compound consists of [Ni1O6]2[Ni2O6] chains built of two edge‐sharing octahedrons “Ni1O6” linked via μ3‐OH to a vertex of the Ni2 octahedron. The connection between the chains is settled by the tdc2– anions,… Show more

“…Crystal structures, solved from single crystal or powder X-Ray diffraction, show great versatility and interesting relations between 1D, 2D and 3D parent structures. [68][69][70][71] They are considered as structural models when needed to solve less crystalline parent derivatives.…”

“…[29] The first is related to host-guest interactions and the second to the intrinsic flexibility of the framework itself, which is induced by the existence of weak points within the skeleton, allowing the deformation of the network under the action of a stimulus. Such a deformation of the framework structure is usually associated with the modifications of the bridging ligands [30] and/or metal coordination [31] sphere (e.g., solvent removal or elongation of bonds). The trz ligand in 1 a and 1 b is rigid and consequently is not responsible for the structural deformation.…”

“…[1][2][3][4] The coordination polymers find application in diverse areas, viz. luminescence, [5,6] catalysis, [7][8][9] electronics, [10,11] gas adsorption, separation [12][13][14] and magnetism. [15] Additionally they have been employed as sensors for the detection of cations, anions and small molecules as well.…”
