Structure and pervaporation performance of novel quaternized poly(vinyl alcohol)/γ‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane hybrid membranes

Abstract: Novel hybrid organic-inorganic membranes were prepared via sol-gel reactions of quaternized poly(vinyl alcohol) (q-PVA) and c-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTEOS) for pervaporation dehydration of an 85 wt % ethanol solution. The physicochemical structure of the hybrid membranes was characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM, TG, and TEM. Nanofractal objects originated from self-assembly of ammonium groups on the q-PVA chains and amino groups in APTEOS can be observed on the surface of the hybrid membranes. When APTEOS/ PV… Show more

“…The peak at 3750 cm −1 corresponds to the presence of Si-OH at the terminal end of the Si-O-Si network. These peaks are consistent with earlier research [ 19 , 20 , 21 ].…”

“…The thermal stability of the PVA/VTES hybrid membranes was studied by TG and DTG, as shown in Figure 5. Two weight loss regions and two peaks around 260 and 450°C are found in DTG curves originated from the degradation of CO bonds and the cleavage of the backbones of PVA chains, respectively 34. And the introduction of VTES improved the thermal stability of PVA membranes from the peak top temperature of DTG curves around 260°C.…”

“…In previous work, we have used γ‐aminopropyl‐triethoxysilane (APTEOS) and 1,2‐bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane to modify PVA, quaternized PVA, and CS membranes. The resulting hybrid membranes were used for dehydration of alcohol solutions 7, 32–34. They exhibit low swelling in ethanol aqueous solution, and high permeation flux and water permselectivity.…”

“…Similar membranes were later used for acid recovery [ 57 ]. Hybrid quaternized PVA (Q-PVA) based membranes were also used for the pervaporation dehydration of ethanol [ 58 ]. Q-PVA was obtained by reaction of PVA with glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride (GTMA-Cl) followed by cross-link formation with glutaraldehyde (GA).…”
