Structure and physical properties of sodium borate glasses containing nickel oxide

Abstract: A series of glass samples were prepared from a mixtures of B2Oa, Na20 and NiO. The role of nickel oxide in a glass matrix was studied by using infrared spectra, optical absorption, magnetic susceptibility, density, and differential thermal analysis (DTA). It was shown that the addition of nickel oxide at different concentrations to the glass batches causes some deformation in the glass structure. The values of ligand field strength and Racah parameter indicated an increasing degree of covalency. The glass samp… Show more

“…Nickel ions are reported to occupy both tetrahedral and octahedral positions in the glass matrices [17][18][19][20][21][22]. Attempts were also made to investigate the lasing action of these ions in certain crystal and glass systems since these ions possess several strong absorption bands in the visible and NIR regions where the pumping sources are easily available [23].…”

“…For sample containing 15 mol% CuO, the band at 1086 cm −1 assigned to B-O linkages of BO 4 groups [38], the band at 1283 cm −1 due to B-O stretching vibration of metaborate chain and orthoborate [20].…”
