Our single crystal study reveals that the single-layer S=2 triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet FeGa2S4 forms a frozen spin-disordered state, similar to the S=1 isostructural magnet NiGa2S4. In this state, the magnetic specific heat C{M} is not only insensitive to the field, but shows a T2 dependence that scales to C{M} of NiGa2S4, suggesting the same underlying mechanism of the 2D coherent behavior. In contrast, the bilayer system Fe2Ga2S5 exhibits a 3D antiferromagnetic order.

MnGa 1 . 4 Sco. 6 S 4 (trigonal, P3mi, D\ d (no. 164), α = 375.2(1), c = 1222.8(4) pm, V = 0.1491(1) nm 3 , Z = 1, D x = 3.31 Mg m" 3 ) crystallizes in a layered FeGa 2 S 4 -type structure. The octahedral site of the lattice is statistically occupied by 0.6 Sc 3+ and 0.4 Mn 2 + . Gallium and the rest of the manganese is distributed over the tetrahedral sites.

Electronic structure study of triangular lattices inFeGa2S4,Fe2Ga

We have studied the electronic structure of the Fe and Ni triangular lattices in FeGa 2 S 4 , Fe 2 Ga 2 S 5 , and NiGa 2 S 4 using photoemission spectroscopy measurements, configuration-interaction calculations on FeS 6 and NiS 6 cluster models, and unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations on FeS 2 and NiS 2 triangular lattices. The cluster-model analysis of the Fe 2p core-level spectra shows that the S 3p to Fe 3d charge-transfer energy ⌬ is ϳ2.5 eV in FeGa 2 S 4 and Fe 2 Ga 2 S 5 , in contrast to the small ⌬ ͑ϳ−1 eV͒ found in NiGa 2 S 4 . The relationship between the ⌬ value and the superexchange pathway has been examined using the unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations. In FeGa 2 S 4 and Fe 2 Ga 2 S 5 , the superexchange interaction between the nearest-neighbor sites is dominant while that between the third-nearest-neighbor sites is enhanced in NiGa 2 S 4 .
