Structure mapping at Trap Spring Oilfield, Nevada, using controlled-source magnetotellurics

Abstract: The seismic reflection method has been a highly successful tool in oil and gas exploration for half a century, and it presently accounts for about 98% of all geophysical expenditures worldwide. However, the relatively high cost of seismic exploration and its limitations in certain geologic environments are continuing problems. Some help has been provided by the magnetotelluric (MT) sounding technique, but the cost of MT is also quite high due to the low natural signal strengths being measured. The controlled-s… Show more

“…An example of the shift procedure is found in CSAMT data obtained over Trap Spring Field (Hughes and Carlson, 1987), a study which is described more fully in the Case Histories section. The data ( Figure 33) show layering effects due to stratigraphy in this area, a general trend toward lower resistivities toward the east due to higher groundwater salinity in that direction, and several pronounced lateral features.…”

“…Since Goldstein and Strangway (1975) validated this technique in a massive sulfide deposit, CSAMT has been widely applied in a variety of exploration problems worldwide. These applications primarily focused on geothermal (e.g., Sandberg and Hohmann, 1982;Bartel and Jacobsen, 1987;Bromley, 1993;Wannamaker, 1997aWannamaker, , 1997b, mineral (e.g., Strangway et al, 1973;Boerner et al, 1993;Kellett et al, 1993;Chen et al, 2010;An and Di, 2010), and hydrocarbon (e.g., Hughes and Carlson, 1987). Other applications included groundwater surveys (e.g., Carlson et al, 2005), fault-zone mapping (e.g., Theodore and Sweetkind, 2011), and engineering detection (e.g., Unsworth et al, 2000).…”
