“…Burkholderia spp. in biofilms were shown to produce multiple extracellular polysaccharides (e.g., Bep, cellulose and cepacian) and protein-based matrix components (e.g., BapA, fimbria, lectins) (Ferreira et al, 2011; Yakandawala et al, 2011; Fazli et al, 2012; Inhulsen et al, 2012; Cescutti et al, 2013). A correlation between colony morphology and the production of extracellular matrix components has been reported for several bacterial species, including B. cenocepacia (e.g., Fazli et al, 2012).…”

“…The structural analysis of LA-EPS-20079 was performed using the ‘determine structure’ module of the CASPER program Jansson et al [ 18 ]; Lundborg and Widmalm [ 19 ] and Rönnols et al [ 20 ], suggesting the following structure residues; three d -GlcAp, one l -fucose and one d -Glc residues. Furthermore, previously published 1 H-and 13 C-NMR data by Dutton and Merrifield [ 21 ]; Cescutti et al [ 22 ]; Wang and Yang [ 23 ]; Perry et al [ 24 ] and Fotakis and Timbrell [ 25 ], together, with our current complete assignment of 1 H and 13 C chemical shifts and the inter-residue connectivity, of the monosaccharides residues of LA-EPS-20079 allowed LA-EPS-20079 to be formulated as α- d -Glc(1→2)][α- l -Fuc(1→4)] α- d -GlcA(1→2) α- d -GlcA(1→2) α- d -GlcA.…”

“…This protective effect was also provided by scavenging, resulting in extensive deacetylation of cepacian followed by the degradation of the polysaccharide backbone [5]. Although cepacian is the most common EPS produced by Bcc species, the production of at least six other polysaccharides, either synthesized alone or in combination with cepacian, has been demonstrated [6]. Burkholderia vietnamiensis LMG 10929, used in this study, has been shown not to produce cepacian as main EPS but a polysaccharide containing a fucose residue in its backbone.…”
