Structure of the fivefold surface of the Ag-In-Yb icosahedral quasicrystal

Abstract: The surface structural study of an icosahedral ͑i͒ quasicrystal of the Cd-Yb family is presented. Comparison of bias-dependent scanning tunneling microscopy data from the fivefold surface of i-Ag-In-Yb with the refined bulk model of isostructural i-Cd-Yb indicates that surfaces are formed at bulk planes intersecting the center of the rhombic triacontahedral clusters, the building blocks of the Cd-Yb family quasicrystals. These observations open up the possibility of the use of this material as a template for e… Show more

“…The In decagon at each vertex of the P1 tiling is surrounded by ten Yb pentagons, which belong to different RTH units or to the glue atoms between the RTH clusters. In STM, large protrusions are observed at the positions of In decagons at negative bias, whereas the Yb pentagons are resolved at positive bias 24 .…”

“…Our hope, a priori, was that the chemical potential of Zn in the Al-Pd-Zn approximant would be significantly lower than in elemental Zn. As precedent, the surface of quasicrystalline Ag-In-Yb has been annealed and characterized successfully in UHV, despite the rather high vapor pressure of elemental Yb [12,13].…”
