Structures and Properties of Hydrocarbon Ionomer Membranes. 2. Polystyrene-Based Cation Exchangers

Abstract: The structural properties of the polymers poly(methyl methacrylate-co-methacrylic acid) P(MMA-co-MAA), poly(styrene-co-methacrylic acid) P(S-co-MAA), and poly(styrene-co-p-sulfonic acid) P(S-co-SSA) were studied using small-angle X-ray scattering methods. Evidence for ionic aggregation in the dry state and phase separation in the wet state is found for some of the systems. The thin film membrane properties of these polymers as well as poly(styrene-co-acrylic acid) P(S-co-AA) and poIy(vinylcyclohexaneco-acrylic… Show more

“…It is thus not unreasonable to assume that the associated structures of the ionomer are reflected and dictates the structures of the water molecules. This interpretation is in agreement with the mid-infrared work of Brozoski et al 10,11 and the NIR work of Eisenberg and co-workers, 17 which have pointed out the important and multistructural characteristic of water in ionomer.…”

“…Assignments for the ionic units are more tentative in the absence of specific literature data. The major transitions at 1909 nm and the pronounced 1980 nm shoulder have contributions from the intense water (absorbed) OH combination band 17 and the overtone of the CAO. The water OH first stretching overtone is present at 1413 nm.…”

“…These observations are consistent with separate reports by Jiang and Eisenberg that the water/salt ratios increased with increasing ion content. [57] It was estimated that the PBSis contain about 14 water molecules per ion pair, which is significantly higher than the water uptake of polystyrene-based ionomers, possessing 2.8 water molecules per ion pair. [58] The hydrolytic degradation of PBSis was drastically accelerated with increasing ionic content ( Figure 5).…”
