Carbonate hydroxyapatite is the common derivative of hydroxyapatite found in living systems. It is the building block of most hard tissues, including the teeth and bones. A vast majority of the applications of this versatile material focus on its biomedical applications, which is attributable to its closeness to biological apatites. Hydroxyapatite is a strong precursor to carbonate apatite in nature, and many experiments show that both are similar in a few respects. A significant divergence point is carbonate's obvious impact on its physicochemical properties and concomitant applications. The inclusion of carbonate ions into the lattice of hydroxyapatite results in morphological and physicochemical changes that vary with the method of synthesis and extent of substitution. The unique crystal structure, improved surface area, and porous morphology of carbonate hydroxyapatites also make it useful for catalysis and environmental remediation as adsorbents for heavy metals. This review briefly examines carbonate hydroxyapatite, its synthesis, its modification, and its characterization. It also highlights its biomedical applications while drawing attention to its non-medical potential.

Industrialization and globalization have caused severe environmental problems, such as contaminating water bodies by toxic agents from various industries, generating a significant loss of biodiversity and health risks. Globally, approximately 80% of wastewater is discharged without treatment, worsening the situation. However, in Colombia, initiatives have been taken to improve wastewater management, with ambitious investments and targets to improve treatment infrastructure. Recently, advanced technologies have been developed to treat wastewater, including more efficient and sustainable biological methods, such as using coconut-derived adsorbent biomaterials, rich in useful properties for the adsorption of pollutants in solutions. This research focuses on developing a composite biomaterial using cellulose acetate (CA) extracted from coconut mesocarp and polyhydroxy butyrate (PHB), by the casting method, to treat wastewater. Adsorption tests with the tracer methylene blue (MB) were carried out in the Energy and Environment laboratory of the University of Cartagena. For this, MB solutions were prepared with 5 to 50 ppm concentrations. The analyses showed that the composite biomaterial is thermally stable and has good homogeneity and porosity. At a concentration of 40 ppm and a dosage of 10 mg of adsorbent, the adsorption efficiency was 89%, with an adsorption capacity of 35.98 mg/g. The above indicates that the composite biomaterial is presented as a sustainable, improved, and efficient solution to remove contaminants from wastewater, benefiting the environment and human health.

Since phosphorus resources are limited, optimal management of available phosphorus (P) and phosphorus recovery is a vital issue for the entire world. Studies continue on more efficient and economical phosphorus recovery techniques from wastewater and sludge. Recovery of phosphorus as vivianite is a current issue worldwide and studies are ongoing. Vivianite is a valuable mineral used in some industrial facilities and agricultural activities. Therefore, recovery of P from wastewater based on vivianite formation not only contributes to the sustainable use of phosphorus but also provides potential economic opportunities. In this study, it was aimed to determine the recovery potential of phosphorus as vivianite and to evaluate the effects of operational conditions on phosphorus recovery. For this purpose, two types of lab‐scale crystallizer, semibatch completely mixed and fluidized bed, were used. In experimental studies, the effects of operating parameters such as pH, Fe/P ratio, Fe feeding rate, and P concentration for vivianite crystallization were investigated. The highest phosphorus recovery was found at a Fe/P ratio of 1.8 and P removal efficiency of up to 69% was achieved by vivianite crystallization.
