Student‐configurable, Web‐accessible virtual systems for system dynamics and controls courses

Abstract: This article describes a process for disseminating, via the Internet, configurable animated simulations of physical systems-virtual systems-used to visualize System Dynamics concepts. To enable widespread use, software tools readily available under a General Public License (GPL) are used. However, the dynamic systems are simulated and animated using MATLAB 1 .

“…Studying mainly mathematics and basic concepts to understand the dynamic system responses causes students to be less interested in essential subject. If the students are provided with various ways to reach learning sources of information, which is one of the flexible education aims, classical education based on textbooks and chalkboards becomes time consuming and insufficient in completion realize the dynamic system responses, nowadays [3,4].…”

“…Otherwise, the students will not be able to learn and interpret effectively in the experiments [1,[9][10][11]. If the required conditions for a high quality or a normal laboratory are not provided, then the practical experiment part of the education will be insufficient resulting in inexperienced graduates deprived of scientific knowledge and abilities [3]. Insufficient laboratory conditions and experiments decrease the education quality and result in the presence of incompetent graduates with less ability [1].…”

“…Users can plan and conduct experiments, collect experimental data, and analyze the results as if they are physically present in the laboratory. Virtual laboratories are an important educational tool that brings together geographically distant research groups, allowing them to share data, documents, video, and voice, while integrating their computational and laboratory resources 1, 6–9.…”
