Student perceptions toward virtual reality training in dental implant education

Abstract: Objectives Both the shortage of professional teaching resources and the expensive dental implant supplies impede the effective training of dental undergraduate in implantology. Virtual reality (VR) technology may provide solutions to solve these problems. This pilot study was implemented to explore the usability and acceptance of a VR application in the training of dental implant among dental students at the Jinan University School of Stomatology. Methods… Show more

“…One way to overcome this is by creating realistic virtual environments and engaging multiple senses including haptic feedback. Using VR platforms for practice, as a preview to the face to face sessions and to reduce the laboratory or clinical time would be perceived positively rather than replacing the real experiences in the laboratories, animals or patients 57 .…”

“…Since its complete spectrum cannot be covered within the undergraduate curriculum, previous studies have stated the importance of solid theoretical foundation and suitable clinical experience before the clinical internship or rotation [8,9]. Multiple teaching approaches have been introduced into the undergraduate setting of implant dentistry education, including implant planning software, virtual reality training, and 3D modelling [10][11][12]. Nevertheless, current teaching modes only focused on the preclinical training inside the laboratory, and barriers in implant dentistry education still exist, such as lack of clinical training, and divorce of theory and clinical practice [13].…”
