Students' Errors on the Circle Concept in Basic Mathematic Lectures

Abstract: This study aims to examine student errors on the concept of circles. Researchers conduct explorative study by giving individual written tests (two description questions) to students after learning the concept of circles in basic mathematic lectures. The participants of this study are 46 students of 2015/2016 bacth in the Department of Biology Education of a university in Indonesia. Based on the results of data analysis, more than 75% of the participants experienced errors in the concept of circles. The number … Show more

“…The report suggests that traditional geometry lectures may have focused mainly on eliciting students' responses in the form of memorised facts instead of developing their reasoning and deduction skills alongside a solid understanding of the facts (Jones, 2002). Among all geometry concepts, the properties of a circle are among the most important concepts for students to master (Damayanti, 2018;Sudihartinih, 2018). As indicated by Damayanti (2018), connections between geometry and algebra are critical for students to understand the meaning of the variables in the equation of circles and thus equip them with the knowledge and skills to solve similar problems.…”
