Students’ General Knowledge of the Learning Process: A Mixed Methods Study Illustrating Integrated Data Collection and Data Consolidation

Abstract: There were two purposes for this mixed methods study: to investigate (a) the realistic meaning of awareness and understanding as the underlying constructs of general knowledge of the learning process and (b) a procedure for data consolidation. The participants were 11th-grade high school and first-year university students. Integrated data collection and data transformation provided for positive but small correlations between awareness and understanding. A comparison of the created combined and integrated new d… Show more

“…Teddlie and Tashakkori (2009) called this process ''quantitizing'' and ''qualitizing'' as a strategy in conversion designs to provide a third option beyond sequential and parallel temporal order of strands (Greene, 2007). Quantitizing means assigning numeric values to nonnumeric data (Sandelowski, Voils, & Knafl, 2009), and qualitizing means converting quantitative data into narrative representations (Teddlie & Tashakkori, 2009;van Velzen, 2016). 2.…”

“…To achieve consolidation, qualitative and quantitative data have to be merged into a new consolidated data set. Thus, they have to take the same (or similar) format, which means some form of data transformation is required (Collingridge, 2012; Sandelowski et al, 2009; van Velzen, 2016). From this data set, it is not possible to identify the original qualitative or quantitative data, instead, a genuine new piece of information is generated (Caracelli & Greene, 1993; Creswell & Plano Clark, 2018).…”

“…A mixed methodology, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques, was used to inquire into the object of study [32,33]. This method is particularly useful when we want to gain in-depth knowledge of a multidimensional phenomenon that is difficult to analyse using a single research approach [34].…”

“…From the field of education, van Velzen (2018) provides an example of data consolidation as a mixed methods data analysis approach. Through this integration strategy, the author seeks to obtain a better understanding of students’ awareness with regard to their understanding of general knowledge of the learning process.…”
