SUMMARY: Two species of naphthalene-utilizing bacteria from soil were able to metabolize 1-chloro-and 1-bromonaphthalene. From cultures in which l-chloronaphthalene was the sole source of organic carbon, D-8-ChlOrO-1: 2-dihydro-1 : 2-dihydroxynaphthalene and 3-chlorosalicylic acid were isolated. 3-Bromosalicylic acid was isolated from cultures with 1-bromonaphthalene and evidence of the formation of a 'diol' compound obtained. The course of the metabolic pathways is discussed.

The chlorination of 1-nitronaphthalene has becn investigated in presence of a series of catalysts and under a variety of experimental conditions. The reaction products were analysed by gas-liquid chromatography and the products shown to bc l-chloro-5-nitro-, 3-chloro-5-nitro-, 1-chloro-8-nitroand 1,4-dichlor0-5-nitro-naphthalene. IntroductionThe chlorination of 1-nitronaphthalene has been the subject of a number of patents' and publications3~ which are imprecise and in some cases only account for about 30% of the reaction m i~t u r e .~. Contradictions in the literature have been attributed to the use of impure l-nitron a~h t h a l e n e .~ By use of gas-liquid chromatography as in the present investigation it is now possible t o describe, even quantitatively, the effect of various catalysts on the reaction carried out in the molten state and in carbon tetrachloride, The results are summarised in Table I.
