Studies of Biological Activities of the Roots of Bombax ceiba L.

Abstract: Bioactivities of the methanolic crude extract of root of Bombax ceiba L. and its organic and aqueous soluble partitionates were studied to investigate its medicinal importance. In Free radical scavenging assay by DPPH method, the aqueous soluble partitionate (AQSF) demonstrated the highest free radical scavenging activity with IC50 value of 3.33 ± 0.25 μg/ml. The brine shrimp lethality bioassay of different partitionates of the root demonstrated the significant lethality by the hexane soluble partitionate (HSF… Show more

“…The total phenolic content of various extracts of the sample (T. portulacastrum leaves) was determined using Folin-Ciocalteu's reagent with minor modifications to the method described by Singleton and Rossi. 20,21 1mg/ml of each extract of the sample was taken in separated test tubes. Each test tube received 5ml Folin-Ciocalteu's reagent (1:10 v/v distilled water) and 4ml sodium bicarbonate solution (75 g/l).…”

“…The antioxidant activity properties of the root extract are attributed to their high phenolic and tannin contents [ 152 ]. The aqueous soluble partition (AQSF) of the methanolic root extracts of B. ceiba scavenged DPPH radical with an IC 50 value of 3.33 μg/mL [ 153 ]. Further, the methanol and petroleum ether root extract of B. ceiba was reported to scavenge DPPH radical with IC 50 values of 144.77 and 214.83 μg/mL [ 155 ].…”
