Studies of Enzyme Changes During Sporulation in Bacillus cereus, Using Starch Gel Electrophoresis

Abstract: Summary Starch gel electrophoresis showed that Bacillus cereus esterase and catalase are not single enzymes but multimolecular species and that they undergo changes during sporulation. Heat resistant spore catalase was detected in vegetative cells before mature spores were present.

“…It is common to find that isoenzyme patterns change as organisms age and undergo morphological changes. For example, esterase and catalase patterns of Bacillus cereus undergo changes during sporulation (Baillie and Norris 1963). The acid phosphatase and esterase patterns of Dictyostelium discoideum alter as the vegetative myxamoebae differentiate into spores (Solomon, Johnson, and Gregg 1964).…”

“…No organisms with this esterase pattern have so far been isolated that were not of serotype 4B. Two isolates (see below) had slightly modified esterase patterns with considerably less intense or-esterase bands (Baillie & Norris, 1963).…”

“…A study of the esterase profiles from various stages of the growth cycle of BacilZus cereus has revealed a changing pattern of enzymes (Baillie & Norris, 1963). A single esterase band was demonstrated in young cultures and the development of a second band was noted after I I h. growth.…”
