Studies of Some Haemostatic Variables in Preeclamptic Women in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria

Abstract: Preeclampsia is a serious and life-threatening pregnancy complication. In this study, the levels of haemostatic parameters were measured in preeclamptic women in Owerri, Imo State. A total of 120 pregnant women aged 18-45 years at 20-40 weeks of pregnancy were recruited; 60 were preeclamptic women (test group) while 60 were normotensive pregnant women (control group). Preeclampsia was determined by the presence of ≥2+ protein in the urine using combi 2 dipstick for urinalysis and sphygmomanometer blood pressur… Show more

“…Hydroxyurea has shown promise in reducing hemolysis, decreasing the frequency of vasoocclusive crises, and improving overall outcomes in non-pregnant individuals with sickle cell disease. While evidence regarding its safety during pregnancy is evolving, it may be considered in certain cases under close monitoring [89][90][91][92][93][94]. In cases of severe anemia or complications such as acute chest syndrome or stroke, red blood cell transfusions may be necessary.…”

“…The placenta, vital for fetal nourishment and oxygenation, is susceptible to oxidative stress due to its exposure to high oxygen levels and vulnerability to ROS-mediated damage. Oxidative stress in the placenta can impair nutrient transfer, compromise blood flow, and disrupt the balance of proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory mediators, potentially impacting fetal growth and development [64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71]. Maternal lifestyle choices, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, poor diet, and exposure to environmental toxins, can exacerbate oxidative stress during pregnancy, amplifying the risks of complications.…”

“…Metabolic alterations associated with neutrophil activation, such as increased oxidative stress markers or changes in lipid metabolism, might serve as indicative biomarkers of heightened inflammation. Analysis of biomarkers within the placental microenvironment or amniotic fluid, where inflammatory processes occur, could provide insights into local neutrophil-driven inflammation and its impact on pregnancy outcomes [81][82][83][84].…”
