“…Placental oxygen consumption as measured in vivo in the rabbit and sheep is approximately 10.7 and 10.4 mi/min per kg (Campbell et aI., 1966;Faber and Hart, 1966), respectively. Estimates of Oz consumption for human placenta derived from in vitro studies of placental slices (Friedman and Sachtleben, 1960;Mackay, 1958;Villee, 1953b) and from perfusion of the umbilical circulation (Nyberg and Westin, 1957) were 3-4 ml/min per kg, a figure that appears to be far too low.
