Studies on diacetylenic vinyl compounds. VI. ESR studies on the polymerization of diacetylene containing acrylate and methacrylates

Abstract: A number of diacetylene containing acrylate and methacrylates have been synthesized and the interaction between their propagating radicals and the diacetylene groups was studied by ESR spectroscopy. In the case of polymerization at 70°C using AIBN as an initiator, the propagating radicals of methacrylates are temporarily trapped with the diacetylenes with rapid exchange of the electron, thus showing strong signals of the propagating radicals. Gamma irradiation of the frozen state produces a blue color in sampl… Show more

“…The RIPA values of both FPUAs decreased upon increasing the FPUA oligomer content. Moreover, the greater the number of fluorine atoms on the surface, the more thromboresistant the material, suggesting that a higher fluorocarbon chain content significantly reduced the degree of platelet adhesion and platelet activation on the polyurethane surface [26,32,59]. In addition, the presence of hydrogen bonding improved the phase separation at a high FPUA oligomer content in the HDI-type system, resulting in low surface energies and good blood compatibilities.…”

“…The advantages afforded by photopolymerization processes have led to rapid growth in their use in various fields, including the preparation of films and coatings on substrates such as paper, metal, plastic, and wood. Acrylate and methacrylate groups have been used widely for UV photopolymerization because their high reactivities [32] lead to rapid, nearcomplete conversions, i.e. no residual unreacted monomers, with control of the evolution of the heat of polymerization.…”

“…Their solution homopolymerisation was studied in the presence of a radical initiator and it was found that the polymerisation process bore more similarity to that observed with the analogous hydrocarbonated monomers containing triple bonds rather than that observed with polyfluorinated monomers without any alkyne groups. Furthermore, under the reaction conditions used, the triple bonds remained unchanged as Burillo et al [7] They synthesised some of these compounds and studied the interaction between the propagating radicals and the triple bonds. However, the only reference in the literature regarding the polymerisation of an acrylic ester containing both a polyfluorinated chain and one or more triple bonds was reported in 1996.…”

“…13 Burillo et al used either heat or ␥ irradiation to study network formation from mono-acrylates and mono-methacrylates that contained diacetylene groups. 14 The networks in these studies were formed in a single polymerization step and an interaction was observed between the acrylate/methacrylate groups and the diacetylene groups. In contrast, Dirlikov et al has prepared networks in two separate polymerization steps: first by oxidative polymerization in a solvent, and then by subsequent crosslinking of diacetylene units in the backbone.…”
