Studies on epizootic microsporidiosis in wild dusky grouper(Epinephelus guaza) from Mediterranean sea at Matrouh Governorate, Egypt

Abstract: ABSTRACThis study was carried out on 476 wild marine Dusky Grouper (Epinephelus guaza), captured from the West North shore of Mediterranean Sea at Matrouh Governorate from Sept. 2005 to Sept. 2006. The total prevalence of microsporidia among wild Epinephelus guaza fish was found to be 301 (63.23 %). The investigated fish, revealed the presence of cyst-like nodules ( xenomas, 2-4 mm. in diameter) in the gill arches. Each gill arch was infected with (1-5) xenomas and up to 30 nodules per fish. The recovered spor… Show more

“…Our finding could be attributed to the water temperature which is considered an important factor in development of microsporidia in different species of fish (Sveen et al, 2012). Additionally, it could explain the increase in the microsporidian infection rate in spring that fish may be eat excess infected zooplankton (Marzouk et al, 2010) . Histopathological studies are one of principal tools for the diagnosis of microsporidiosis (Sanders et al, 2020).…”

“…Presently, there are 33 Glugea species, predominantly reported adhering to organs of the digestive tract of freshwater and marine fishes (Lom 2002;Vagelli et al 2005;Wu et al 2005;Voronin and Iukhimenko 2010;Su et al 2014;AbdelBaki et al 2015a, b;Azevedo et al 2016). To our best knowledge, and despite fish microsporidia lacking clear host specificity (Lom and Dyková 1992;Lom et al 1995;Nagasawa and Cruz-Lacierda 2004;Payghan et al 2009), the parasite here described constitutes the first occurrence of a Glugea species infecting a marine fish of the family Serranidae in the Madeira Archipelago, and one of the few reports of microsporidians infecting serranids worldwide (Zhang et al 2004(Zhang et al , 2005Wu et al 2005;Marzouk et al 2010;Jithendran et al 2011).…”

“…pada ikan sidat asal Danau Lindu sebesar 46 dan Marzouk et al (2010) prevalensi pada ikan kerapu tertinggi mencapai 88,8. Dampak yang ditimbulkan parasit ini seperti terbentuknya nodul berwarna coklat kehitaman pada jaringan adiposa dan organ visceral terutama pada dinding usus dan caecae pyloric (Jithendram et al 2011).…”
