Studies on Schistidium (Grimmiaceae, Bryophyta) in Europe, with particular reference to the Alps: I. A description of S. marginale sp. nov.

Abstract: Schistidium marginale is described as a new species from several European states including Austria, Georgia, Italy, Macedonia, Spain, Switzerland and Turkey. The species is fully illustrated, its affinities are discussed in detail and its current distribution is mapped. The new species is closely related to S. confertum and S. echinatum from which it differs in having a coarser and thicker costa which is 3-4-stratose in mid-leaf and 4-layered at the base; strongly thickened, 2-4-stratose and (1-)2-5-seriate le… Show more

“…Among its diagnostic morphological characters were listed: strongly thickened, 2-4-stratose and (1-) 2-5-seriate leaf margins; coarse, 2-4-stratose costa which is 'trapezoid, subrectangular or irregularly angular in outline' in transverse section; and 'straight and rather stiff, ± flattened in lower part, not decurrent, coarsely spinulose' hair-points. This acidophilous saxicolous moss was reported also from Switzerland, Italia, Macedonia, and Spain in Europe and from Turkey and Georgia (Blom et al, 2016), but also from Russian Caucasus (Ignatova et al (2010) as a provisional name.…”

“…Suárez & Muñoz, 2015: 325). Se publicó poco después de forma válida (Blom et al, 2016). El taxon tiene una amplia distribución en Europa, y vive en rocas ácidas en un rango altitudinal de 1100-2350 m. En España se conoce exclusivamente de una localidad de los Pirineos (Panticosa, Huesca, Heras & Infante s.n.…”

“…Moreover, this revision created a frame, which allowed further increase in the formally recognized biodiversity within the genus by means of regional alpha-taxonomic studies. In the course of such studies, a number of Schistidium species were described from Europe [ 2 , 3 ], North America [ 4 , 5 , 6 ] Russia [ 7 , 8 ] and China [ 9 , 10 , 11 ], as well as from North Africa [ 12 ] and South America [ 13 ]. Molecular data [ 7 , 14 ] supported the narrow species concepts of suggested by Blom [ 1 ].…”
