The potassium status of22 soils with low reserves of non-exchangeable potassium was assessed by measuring: (a) the potassium potential (the free energy of exchange of potassium for calcium plus magnesium); (b) the soil's capacity to resist a change in potential ("buffering capacity"); (c) the amount of exchangeable potassium and its percentage saturation.The ability of these measures to predict the supply of potassium was tested by growing subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) in pots and determining its potassium content at successive harvests.The soil's buffering capacity was found to affect the supply of potassium even when uptake was small. It is suggested that this was partly because buffering capacity affects the rate of supply by diffusion to plant roots.As the uptake of potassium became progressively larger, the potential became increasingly unsuitable as a single index of availability, but a multiple regression containing terms for potential and for buffering capacity continued to account for a large proportion (89%) of the variation. The relationship obtained can be used to indicate the amount of potassium required to bring a deficient soil to a desirable status.

Transformation of three‐layer silicates through K‐release and K‐uptake (A review). In soils formed from unconsilidated sediments with illite‐vermiculite‐smectite mixtures in their clay fractions the clay mineral transformation from illite to vermiculite and smectite between pH 5 and 7 cannot be considered so far as proven on the grounds of available analytical data. Studies of soil profiles showed that the formation of illite from expandable three layer silicates predominates over the formation of smectite from illite. Practically all samples of loess and calcareous tills of the areas discussed contain smectites. K loesses between pH 5 and 7 are probably very small, because K released during the formation of vermiculites from micas is immediately fixed by smectitic layers which are converted to illite. In those soils potential K fixation of the clay fraction (« 2 μ) is lower than in the corresponding parent sediments despite of vermiculite formation in the soils. Further analytical data (X‐ray, interlattice‐K, K‐selectivity, specific surface) support the hypothesis of illitization of smectites during soil formation.

The study was conducted in the 2010 -2012 cropping seasons in a typical ultisols of the tropics. The aim was to assess variability in soil properties as influenced by three land use types namely: oil palm plantation, maize and yam cultivated lands. The study consisted of both field and laboratory studies. The field study was made up of a land use that was carefully surveyed, mapped into 20 × 30 m 2 and plotted into 5 homogenous units of 0.25 ha. Soil samples were randomly augered by grid survey at 5 m equidistant points and surface 0-15 cm samples collected using screw auger for laboratory analysis of the particle size distribution and some chemical characteristics of the soils in the different land use types. Variation in properties within land use types was measured by estimating the coefficient of variance. The results of the study showed that particle size distribution varied from sand in the oil palm land use type to sandy loam in the maize and yam land use types. The variant ratio tests were 84.4%, for sand, 0.51% for silt and 27.4% for clay, and were less variable. The soil pH ranged from strongly acid (5.25) to moderate acid (5.65) and less variable (CV% = <15%). The variant ratio test was statistically not significant (10.7%). The organic carbon (35.7%), total nitrogen (34.5%) and available phosphorus (27.2%) variant ratio tests were non-significant and less variable. The exchangeable bases, exchange acidity and ECEC were also non significant and less variable. The results indicated clearly that variability could occur within soil units and therefore called for caution in assessing uniformity of soil properties within soil areas under cultivation.
