The genus Conidiobolus is an important group in entomophthoroid fungi and is considered to be polyphyletic in recent molecular phylogenies. To re-evaluate and delimit this genus, multi-locus phylogenetic analyses were performed using the large and small subunits of nuclear ribosomal DNA (nucLSU and nucSSU), the small subunit of the mitochondrial ribosomal DNA (mtSSU) and the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (EF-1α). The results indicated that the Conidiobolus is not monophyletic, being grouped into a paraphyletic grade with four clades. Consequently, the well-known Conidiobolus is revised and three new genera Capillidium, Microconidiobolus and Neoconidiobolus are proposed along with one new record and 22 new combinations. In addition, the genus Basidiobolus is found to be basal to the other entomophthoroid taxa and the genus Batkoa locates in the Entomophthoraceae clade.

(1884) with C. utriculosus Bref. as the type species isolated from the fleshy fruiting bodies of Hirneola and Exidia, members of the Tremellaceae. Costantin (1897) described Boudierella coronata Cost. which was later changed to Delacroixia coronata (Cost. The genus Conidiobolus was described by Brefeld ) Sacc. & Sydow (1899) since the former name was pre-empted. This fungus is identical to Conidiobolus villosus Martin (1925) and until recently was called Entomophthora coronata (Cost.) Kevorkian. Srinivasan and Thirumalachar (1964) showed that the fungus has hypha-like conidiophores and is a species of Conidiobolus, and proposed the name C. coronatus (Cost.) Srin. & Thirum. This fungus is widely distributed and has been shown to be a potential pathogen on insects (Hall and Dunn, 1957; Prasertphon, 1963), inciting phycomycosis of horses (Emmons and Bridges, 1961) and man (Bras et al. 1965). Couch (1939) gave detailed cultural studies on C. brefeldianus Couch.Extensive studies on Conidiobolus species were initiated by Drechsler (1952) who described a method for their isolation and also showed that they are ubiquitous in nature, being associated with plant detritus and decaying vegetative matter. His publications embodying descriptions of 25 new species have contributed a great deal of information on the genus. Some of the Conidiobolus species have gained industrial importance as producers of proteolytic enzymes (Whitehill et al. 1960). There has been a paucity of studies on Conidiobolus species and no serious attempts have been made to isolate and study these fungi in most microbiological laboratories. The only record of Conidiobolus species from England is that of Dring (1958) who reported C. rhysosporus Drechsl. in association with apothecia of Ascobolus. In the course of our studies during the last 5 years in India, we have obtained a number of Conidiobolus isolates including 10 new species.With the increase in number of species, the need for a good morphological basis for their separation has been keenly felt. Conidiobolus is a widely distributed genus throughout the world, and its resting spores include zygospores, chlamydospores and villose conidia. Conidiobolus dabieshanensis is confirmed as a new species with chlamydospores within the genus Conidiobolus based on the morphological evidence and the molecular data of LSU rDNA region. It is morphologically allied with C. adiaeretus and C. firmipilleus and it is phylogenetically closely related to C. humicolus, C. chlamydosporus and C. firmipilleus. The new species differs from C. adiaeretus by the absence of capilliconidia, from C. firmipilleus and C. chlamydosporus by its size of primary conidia and slender and curving germ hyphae arising from a single conidium, and from C. humicolus by its larger primary conidia and the absence of zygospores.
