“…This negative effect of radiation treatment appeared to be stronger during the last days of the life of the males. Other irradiation studies have found that low doses (10Ð 15Gy) could even prolong longevity of adult males, (Anopheles pharoensis Theobald [Abdel-Malek et al 1966] and Anopheles arabiensis Patton [Helinski et al 2006]). The phenomenon of hormesis is proposed to explain the protective effect of a low radiation dose, which would stimulate defenses involved in cell repair mechanisms (Feinendegen 2005).…”
