Studies on the Feeding of Cupric Sulfate Pentahydrate and Cupric Citrate to Broiler Chickens

Abstract: Male commercial broiler strain chickens were fed either a control diet (based on corn and soybean meal) or the control diet supplemented with cupric sulfate pentahydrate or cupric citrate in seven experiments (six in floor pens, one in wire-floored batteries). In Experiment 1, feeding 125 or 250 mg/kg copper increased growth (4.9%) and decreased feed conversion ratios (3.4%), total plasma cholesterol (40.2%), and breast muscle cholesterol (37.0%). Feeding 375 mg/kg copper was without further beneficial effect.… Show more

“…Copper is usually fed commercially at much higher pharmacological levels (125 to 250 mg/kg) because of its growth promoting properties, which is caused by its antibacterial properties (Pesti and Bakalli, 1996). In the present study, Cu resulted in a significant increase in BW gain during 21 to 42 and overall.…”

“…Copper is often added to poultry feeds in increased quantities for preventive purposes because it stimulates the weight gain (Pesti & Bakalli 1996). In practice, however, there is often a copper deficiency in turkeys, with the reason being the presence of phytates and phosphates in feed as well as the antagonism with some chemical elements, for example, between Zn and Cu (Pang & Applegate 2007).…”
