“…High pollen fertility in autotetraploid F1 hybrids has been reported by Tu et al (2003) and Song et al (2006). We found that meiosis processed normally in autotetraploid F1 hybrids.…”

“…In order to show this powerful heterosis more clearly and study the polyploid indica-jopanica hybrids more completely, two polyploid indica-japonica hybrids with powerful heterosis were cloned and planted in a big demonstration/study area. The results showed that the two tetraploid hybrids had normal growth and flowering habits and some characteristics similar to common diploid rice, and a high seed set rate (more than 84% [18] ). In 2005, more than 150 F 1 plants showed the characteristics of high seed set rate.…”

“…Some hybrid combinations displayed powerful predominance. In 2003, for example, large-scale demonstration plantings of two polyploid indica-japonica hybrids showed this powerful heterosis [18] . In addition, hybrids made from PMeS lines and PA64s-4X (sterile lines of two-line hybrid rice) also had high seed set rates and obvious heterosis (Table 3).…”

“…The Balilla-4X line without the PMeS background had a low seed set rate with disorganized meiosis behavior, and was applied as CK. The tetraploid rice lines were cultured according to our patent and by following a previously published technique (Cai et al 2004b;Song et al 2006).…”
