Studies on the positive-ion mass spectra from atmospheric pressure chemical ionization of gases and solvents used in liquid chromatography and direct liquid injection

Abstract: Detailed studies have been made using different source gases and solvents in a Micromass Quattro mass spectrometer under positive ion atmospheric pressure chemical ionization conditions. The major background ions from nitrogen, air, or carbon dioxide were investigated by tandem mass spectrometry, followed by similar studies on solvents commonly employed in normal- and reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, namely, water-acetonitrile, acetonitrile, and dichloromethane, with nitrogen, air, or car… Show more

“…1 μA) were needed for these non-functionalized analytes. The types of ions observed match those observed in previous APCI experiments 15 and in discharge-induced oxidative DESI experiments. 16 Discharge under ambient condition produces ions corresponding to [M – H] + , [M – H + n O] + , [M – 3H + n O] + , etc .…”

“…The spectra in Figs. 2(a) and 2(b) show fragment ions as the base peaks, indicating how effectively energy can be transferred in the multiple collisions with relatively heavy solvent or nitrogen molecules occurring in the region between the sampling and skimmer cones of the Quattro APCI source 33…”

“…The LC-MS spectra in Fig. 13 depicts high intense peak at 97, 57, and 41 m/z attributed to 1-hexene, propanal and acetonitrile molecular fragments respectively [40,41]. The higher molecular weight species with less intense peaks signal larger molecular fragment in the degraded dye solution.…”
