Studies on the sibling species Anopheles gambiae Giles and Anopheles arabiensis Patton (Diptera: Culicidae) in the Kisumu area, Kenya.

Abstract: A study was undertaken of the seasonal abundance, feeding habits, resting habits and malaria infection rates of the sibling species Anopheles gambiae Giles and A. arabiensis Patton on the Kano Plain, Kenya, and the surrounding foothills. A. arabiensis was the dominant species on the plains and A. gambiae in the foothills. A. gambiae was highly anthropophilic with 92% feeding on man, whereas 59% of A. arabiensis fed on cattle. In both species, the choice of host was affected by the availability of cattle. A. ar… Show more

“…1 Because individual species within the species complex differ in host-biting preference, abundance and vector competence, identification of the mosquito vectors to species level and mapping species distribution in heterogeneous environments are critical. 2,3 Simple molecular techniques are now available for identification of anopheline vectors to species level. 4 Through integration of molecular techniques with other tools such as a global positioning system (GPS) and a geographic information system, vector species distribution patterns and the underlying mechanisms can be better studied.…”

“…arabiensis shows a broader latitude of feeding and resting behavior. [20][21][22][23] In the adult population, the proportion of An. gambiae ranged from 26.7% to 94.3% per site (Mutero CM, unpublished data).…”

“…Although relationships between human blood index and livestock abundance have been reported for Anopheles funestus and important vector species in the An. gambiae complex (White et al, 1972;Highton et al, 1979;Lindsay et al, 1993;Mbogo et al, 1993), these studies have been largely descriptive. Here we describe an availability-based model for mosquito hostseeking behaviour and apply it to the quantitative analysis of host choice by malaria vector populations in African communities.…”
