This article describes the molecular weight effect of atactic poly(vinyl alcohol) (a-PVA) on the rheological properties of 7.5, 10.0, and 12.5 g/dL solutions of a-PVA with number-average degrees of polymerization (P n ) of 4000 and 1700 in dimethylsulfoxide/water mixture. a-PVA with a P n of 1700 solutions exhibited almost Newtonian flow behavior, whereas high molecular weight a-PVA, with a P n of 4000 solutions, exhibited shear-thinning behavior. On the plot of storage and loss moduli of a-PVA with a P n of 1700 solutions, the dynamic storage modulus of a-PVA, with a P n of 1700 solutions, was smaller than the dynamic loss modulus over the frequency range of 10 Ϫ1 to 10 2 rad/s. However, the dynamic storage modulus of a-PVA, with a P n of 4000 solutions, was smaller than the dynamic loss modulus in the sol state and, in the postgel state, the dynamic storage modulus became larger than the dynamic loss modulus, indicating the evolution of viscoelastic solid properties. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. SynopsisOptical rotation and density studies have been performed as a function of time on solutions of a single-strand gelatin in salt-free solutions and in solutions containing sodium bromide, tetramethyl and tetrabutylammonium bromide. The reversion to the collagen fold is shown to be first order in all cases but undergoes a change in magnitude as a function of an aggregation process which occurs at a concentration of approximately 0.1% w/v. The structuring effects of the electrolytes on the solvent are shown to relate to the extent of helix regeneration by the protein, in the presence of the electrolyte. The extent of helix regeneration is also shown to relate to the thickness of the electric double layer surrounding the protein molecule.

The enormous increases of the viscosity, η, and the associated activation heat, Qη, in concentrated polymer solutions are attributed to the formation of intermolecular linkages between high polymer molecules and to the increase of glass transition temperature with increasing concentration of the solution. In this paper, the effects of the intermolecular linkages on the viscosity of moderately concentrated solutions were discussed. In this concentration range, η and Qη are represented by unique functions of reduced concentration, vR = BMv2, and the following equation was derived for Qη; Here M is the molecular weight of the polymer, v2 is the volume fraction of the polymer, ΔE is the energy to form an intermolecular linkage, B is a constant for the solution, and Qη0 is the activation heat of viscosity for the solvent. The dependency of η on vR shifts from a first power proportionality to a third power at vR = 1/2. The theory was compared with experiments for solutions of cellulose tributyrate in trichloropropane, polyvinyl alcohol in water, polyvinyl acetate in acetone, and polyisobutylene in xylene.
