“…Identification of plasmalogens was based on the isolation of various derivatives obtained from the total phospholipids or purified ethanolamine-phospholipid fraction. These derivatives included dimethylacetals (HCl-methanol treatment [ 10,11 ]), O-alk-1-enylglycerols (LiA 1 H4 reduction [ 15 ]), free fatty aldehydes (released from O-alk-l-enylglycerols with concentrated HC1 [16]), hydrogenated O-alk-1enylglycerols (H2 over Adams catalyst [17]), and the isopropylidene derivative of the hydrogenated O-alk-1-enylglycerols (acetone-HC104 [18]). The purified O-alk-l-enylglycerols used for hydrogenation were contaminated with less than 3% 14C-O-alkylglycerols.…”

“…The hexane-containing nonsaponifiable lipids and alkylglycerol were back-extracted with 1 ml of water and dried under nitrogen. Isopropylidene derivatives were prepared by dissolving the alkylglycerol in 1 ml of acetone and adding 15 ml of perchloric acid (27). After 15 min at room temperature, 2 ml of water was added and the isopropylidene glycerol derivatives were extracted twice into 2 ml of petroleum ether, combined, dried under nitrogen, and dissolved in 50 ml of hexane for GC-MS analysis.…”

“…Reagent grade solvents were used. Hexane was redistilled over potassium permanganate and the fraction boiling at 67-68°C was collected (Hanahan et al, 1963).…”
