Study designs: Part 7 – Systematic reviews

Abstract: In this series on research study designs, we have so far looked at different types of primary research designs which attempt to answer a specific question. In this segment, we discuss systematic review, which is a study design used to summarize the results of several primary research studies. Systematic reviews often also use meta-analysis, which is a statistical tool to mathematically collate the results of various research studies to obtain a pooled estimate of treatment effect; this will be discussed in the… Show more

“…The key strengths of this scoping review were that it allowed for the synthesis of a broader range of evidence, whilst still maintaining systematic methods to undertake screening, study selection and data extraction. The study provides a broad insight into what is currently known about the range of VR use for ICU staff training, which may not have been possible under more stringent inclusion criteria of a systematic review (Ranganathan & Aggarwal, 2020). A further strength is that the review employed an evidence based theoretical framework to evaluate the current phases of development within existing research, using the methodology of VR clinical trials classification and the Kirkpatrick model (Kirkpatrick, 1998).…”

“…We discussed the steps involved in conducting a systematic review in a recent article. [ 1 ] If the systematic review reveals that there are an adequate number of studies with shared characteristics, then the reviewers may consider performing a formal meta-analysis. The systematic review process ensures that the meta-analysis includes data from all the available studies that fulfill certain selection and/or quality criteria, on the question being studied, in an unbiased manner.…”

“…In a previous article in this series, we looked at systematic reviews – their methods, uses, and limitations. [ 1 ] Systematic reviews are frequently followed by the use of a mathematical or statistical technique to pool the data from individual studies included in the review, to obtain a single summary measure of effect. This technique, known as meta-analysis, is the focus of this article.…”
