Study of a social justice curriculum for students with special needs in a middle school setting through action research

Abstract

Social action-individual or group behavior that involves interaction with other individuals or groups, especially organized toward social reform Justice-just behavior or treatment, fairness, equity, and the principle of moral rightness Equality-the principles of human rights mandate the same treatment of all people and the notion of fairness, respect, and dignity for all Equity-everyone having access to fair and equal treatment under the law, regardless of any aspect of their identity, without being discriminated and receiving exactly what they need Discrimination-the practice or treatment of one person or group of people differently in an unfair and unlawful way, or denying access or opportunities of a person or groups of people based off of a bias Bias-an attitude, belief, or feeling that results in and helps justify unfair treatment of a person based upon an aspect of their identity Marginalized-excluded, ignored, or relegated to the outer edge of a group, society, community, etc. Oppression-systematic devaluing, undermining, marginalizing, and disadvantaging of certain social identities in contrast to the privileged norm by denying something of value to others
