Study of Antioxidant Activity of Hindered Phenols in Bulk Oil and Thin Film Oxidation Conditions in Lubricants

Abstract: Antioxidant activity of three substituted hindered phenolic antioxidants is studied in bulk oil oxidation and thin film oxidation conditions. Test conditions of The Institute of Petroleum test method IP-48 are used for evaluation of inhibition activity of antioxidants in bulk oil oxidation regime and Pressure Differential Scanning Calorimetry (PDSC) is used for thin film oxidation regime. Para position of phenolic antioxidant has a substitution of alkyl, ester and thioether linkage in these selected antioxidan… Show more

“…The efficiency of the synthesized antioxidant compounds from (eugenol) and thiols, they were compared with one of the most important commercial antioxidants Butylated Hydroxy Toluene (BHT) [35,38] . It was observed that when the synthesized antioxidant compounds were added to lubricating oils, the band of the carbonyl directly disappears, as shown in the figure (8).…”

“…The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) reported that there are many levels of properties and different sorts of lubricants. For instance, lubricants with synthetic grade are the excellent kind and can be produced from non-petroleum or petroleum compounds of the chemical elements [8]. Different standard tests are used to analyze lubricant condition in an engine oil system after remaining it for different length trips or before using, such as follows;…”

“…Corrosive acids, resins, and slugs are formed when the oil temperature increases (Owrang et al, 2004). Another function of oil in engines is to prevent corrosion (Sutar and Singare, 2018), for which purpose special anticorrosives are added to the oils. Sealing is used to prevent lubricants from leaking out of the engine, and therefore the oil that is used must also help to lubricate the seals without causing deterioration, shrinking, or hardening.…”
