Study of Bio-Based Carbon Fractions in Tires and Their Pyrolysis Products

Abstract: Wasted tires are the great source of fuel and valuable components but could be a cause of environmental and land pollution. This study shows the detailed method for the determination of radiocarbon isotope (14C) concentration in tires and their pyrolysis products. Samples are taken from truck and passenger car tires in the form of shredded rubber, pyrolysis oil and recovered carbon black. Liquid scintillation counting (LSC) and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) techniques were used for the investigation at G… Show more

“…After preliminary mechanical cleaning of the samples, they were subjected to standard Acid-Base-Acid (ABA) chemical pre-treatment, the purpose of which is to remove fulvic and humic acids and possible carbonates deposited on the dated organic material. Each sample was then charred in a pyrolysis process and then converted to benzene through sequential steps including lithium carbide synthesis, hydrolysis and acetylene trimerisation (Pazdur et al, 2003;Gill et al, 2022). In order to remove radon, which interferes with the measurement of beta activity, the samples were aged in a frozen state for more than 30 days.…”

“…Nowadays, the demand for biobased materials is increasing rapidly. In many fields, the traditional, fossil carbon containing, petrochemical-based materials, such as fuels and plastics can be replaced by biogenic compounds, not only with the same materials and molecules but with alternatives as well (Bastioli 2001;Gill et al 2022;Palstra and Meijer 2014;Jou et al 2015;Santos et al 2019). The demand for these biobased materials has increased not only at the industrial side but at the side of the customers and consumers as well (Hermann et al 2011;European Commission 2019;Pires et al 2015;Santos et al 2019;Pandey and Singhal 2021;Popp et al 2021).…”
