a b s t r a c tSchiff bases are versatile organic compounds which are widely used and synthesized by condensation reaction of different amino compound with aldehydes or ketones known as imine. Schiff base ligands are considered as privileged ligands as they are simply synthesized by condensation. They show broad range of application in medicine, pharmacy, coordination chemistry, biological activities, industries, food packages, dyes, and polymer and also used as an O 2 detector. Semicarbazone is an imine derivative which is derived from condensation of semicarbazide and suitable aldehyde and ketone. Imine ligand econtaining transition metal complexes such as copper, zinc, and cadmium have shown to be excellent precursors for synthesis of metal or metal chalcogenide nanoparticles. In recent years, the researchers have attracted enormous attention toward Schiff bases, semicarbazones, thiosemicarbazones, and their metal complexes owing to numerous applications in pharmacology such as antiviral, antifungal, antimicrobial, antimalarial, antituberculosis, anticancer, anti-HIV, catalytic application in oxidation of organic compounds, and nanotechnology. In this review, we summarize the synthesis, structural, biological, and catalytic application of Schiff bases as well as their metal complexes.

The Schiff base compound, C24H24N2O4, was synthesized by the interaction of 2-hydroxy-3-methoxy benzaldehyde and 1,4-benzene dimethanamine in ethanol, and crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n with Z′ = 0.5. The molecule is not planar, the 1,4-diethylbenzene and the phenol rings are twisted with respect to each other, making a dihedral angle of 74.27 (5)°. The molecular structure is stabilized by an O—H...N hydrogen bond, forming an S(6) ring motif. In the crystal, molecules are linked by C—H...O hydrogen bonds, resulting in the formation of sheets parallel to the bc plane. A Hirshfeld surface analysis was undertaken to investigate the various intermolecular contacts controlling the supramolecular topology, suggesting the H...O (18%) contacts to be the most significant interactions, whereas the H...H (50.5%) and C...H (24.3%) interactions are less significant.

A new alternative approach with crucial mass yield and high reaction rates is proposed for the synthesis of ferrocenyl Schiff bases using an ultrasonicationsolvothermal method. Equimolar condensation of ferrocenecarboxaldehyde and 2-aminophenol interact with each other, giving 1-(1-[2-hydroxyphenyl-2-imino] methyl)-ferrocene (FcOH). Furthermore, this ligand forms 1:1 complexes with cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), and palladium(II) ions. From the different spectral data, it is found that metal ions coordinate with ligands through the azomethine group and the deprotonated oxygen of the phenol groups. Moreover, FcOH and their complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared, 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance, and UV-visible spectrophotometry. The spectral data of FcOH and its metal complexes were discussed in connection with the structural changes due to complexation. Meanwhile, the information about geometric structures can be concluded from the electronic spectra and the magnetic moments. Plainly, electron spin resonance spectra of the Cu(II) complex revealed d x2−y2 as a ground state, suggesting a square planar geometry around the Cu(II) center. The direct optical band gap energy E g values of cobalt, nickel, copper, and palladium complexes of FcOH are found to be 3.7, 3.9, 4.6, and 3.65 eV, respectively. 1-(1-[2-Hydroxyphenyl-2-imino]methyl)-ferrocene and its metal complexes were screened for antibacterial activity. The results depict that the metal complexes were found to be more strongly antibacterial than the guardian Schiff base ligand (FcOH) against one or more bacterial species. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of antimicrobial properties of the purified compound were determined using the broth microdilution method.
