Study of dyeing properties of semipermanent dyestuffs for hair

Abstract: In this article we have evaluated some of the factors (pH, solvent composition and dye structure) that influence the dyeing of hair with dyes from direct semipermanent categories. These dyes, in fact, have been used more and more in cosmetic industry over the last years, due to their lesser aggressiveness vs. hair fibres. Two different dye classes are investigated: phenylene diamine (HC), well known for their low molecular weight and their small size, and a series of Basic dyes, characterized by the same ionic… Show more

“…To perform spectroscopic analyses, locks of hair of about 20 cm length and 0.5 cm diameter were used. The average diameter of a single fibre was 70 ± 1 nm, 95% confidence limit (determined microscopically using 20 specimens) …”

“…Recently, we have reported an investigation on the semipermanent hair straightening focusing our attention on the chemical reactions that can occur between glyoxylic acid and some amino acids chosen as model compounds, whereas the modifications on the yak fibres have been analysed after the usual straightening procedure steps . Yak hair is commonly used to make wigs and has been extensively used as model for human hair in studies on hair treatment and dyeing . Actually, a recent comparative study on the structure and performance of Tianzhu white yak dress hair, tail hair and human hair has confirmed the structural similarity between white yak and human hair…”

“…Generally, large colorant molecules with an acidic nature dye hair by this mechanism. Semi-permanent hair dyes with smaller acidic molecules permeate or diffuse onto the cuticle and some parts of the cortex of the hair shaft by Vander Waals forces and partially ionic bonds [11,12]. Thus, hair coloring product design can enhance the color staining efficacy of the natural colorant extract from temporary to a semi-permanent hair dye.…”

“…On the other hand, the permanent dyes penetrate and diffuse deeper into hair shaft than the temporary and semi-permanent hair dyes. Later, oxidization and polymerization of the colorant molecules in the hair cortex result in coloring on the hair [11,12]. Accordingly, oxidation dyes have better hair coloring abilities than natural hair dyes [12], but there are issues that have been reported concerning the safety of synthetic hair dyes.…”

“…In general, the nitro anilines are not soluble in water and require a glycol or glycol derivative, such as glycerin, to be solubilized in the formulation. Specific solvents, such as mixtures of quaternary salts of high molecular weight, such as Quaternium-80, benzyl alcohol, and glycols are used to ensure not only their solubility in the formulation but also during application and product storage [24,27].…”
