Study of Enhanced-Oil-Recovery Mechanism of Alkali/Surfactant/Polymer Flooding in Porous Media From Experiments

Abstract: Summary The fluid-flow mechanism of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in porous media by alkali/surfactant/polymer (ASP) flooding is investigated by measuring the production performance, pressure, and saturation distributions through the installed differential-pressure transducers and saturation-measurement probes in a physical model of a vertical heterogeneous reservoir. The fluid-flow variation in the reservoir is one of the main mechanisms of EOR of ASP flooding, and the nonlinear coupling and i… Show more

“…ASP processes utilized the benefits of three flooding methods, whereby oil recovery was significantly enhanced, by decreasing IFT, increasing the capillary number, enhancing microscopic displacing efficiency and improving mobility ratio (Shen et al 2009). However, despite these advantages, the success of the ASP projects was not without certain limitations.…”

“…The film rapidly separates oil and water for slug-like oil displacement. Even though there are ways to achieve 20% enhanced recovery by complicated alkali/surfactant/polymer flooding (14) or by surfactants with added nanoparticles (5), the necessary concentrations of the chemicals and nanoparticles are much higher than 0.01 wt %. Our results provide a nanofluid flooding method for tertiary oil recovery that is comparable to the sophisticated chemical methods.…”

“…Therefore, the facilities required to add chemicals in the injection water could be reduced [15]. ASP flooding is subjected to several processes in enhancing oil recovery, including interfacial tension (IFT) reduction between trapped oil phase and ASP slug [32,33], improving mobility control and sweep efficiency [34] as well as wettability alteration by surfactant to more favourable state [35].…”
