We review the present state of knowledge regarding the transverse polarisation (or transversity) distributions of quarks. After some generalities on transverse polarisation, we formally define the transversity distributions within the framework of a classification of all leading-twist distribution functions. We describe the QCD evolution of transversity at leading and next-to-leading order. A comprehensive treatment of non-perturbative calculations of transversity distributions (within the framework of quark models, lattice QCD and QCD sum rules) is presented. The phenomenology of transversity (in particular, in Drell-Yan processes and semi-inclusive leptoproduction) is discussed in some detail. Finally, the prospects for future measurements are outlined.

The state of the art concerning transverse-spin and transverse-momentum phenomena\ud in hard hadronic reactions is reviewed. An account is given of single-spin and azimuthal\ud asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, e+e− annihilation, Drell–Yan\ud production, and hadroproduction. The ongoing experiments and the main theoretical\ud frameworks are described in the first part of the paper. The second part is devoted to the\ud experimental findings and their phenomenological interpretations. A brief discussion of\ud the perspectives of future measurements is finally presented

A review is given of our experimental knowledge of the spin dependent structure functions of the proton, which is based on inclusive high energy scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons by longitudinally polar ized protons in both the deep inelastic and resonance regions, and in cludes preliminary results from our most recent SLAC experiment. Impli cations for scaling, sum rules, models of proton structure, and the hyperfine structure interval in hydrogen am given. Possible future directions of research are indicated.
