The origin of the ferroelectricity of potassium sodium l -tartrate tetrahydrate has long been the subject of experimental and theoretical debate, 17,37,38 and it has recently been proposed that the ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition from the monoclinic P 2 1 to the orthorhombic P 2 1 2 1 2 1 structure is not of the pure order–disorder type or the displacement type, but lies between the two types.
