Study of gasless compositions used in time-delay elements

Abstract: This article presents the results of burn rate measurements conducted for a Fe/BaO 2 pyrotechnic delay composition. Compositions with an iron content between 15% (w/w) and 50% (w/w) yielded burn rates in the range of 4-36 mm s -1 . Mixtures containing more than 50% (w/w) iron could not be initiated by a powder fuse and are not suited for application as delay compositions. This study also presents a cost-efficient method for measuring linear combustion velocities and its application to the investigation of the … Show more

“…Fe 2 O 3 and Fe 2 O 3 /graphene oxide have been used as burn rate catalysts in energetic materials. M. Gerlich et al [15] presented the findings of burn rate tests performed on a Fe/BaO 2 pyrotechnic delay composition. The catalytic performance of Fe 2 O 3 in the thermal degradation of ammonium perchlorate was studied by Li X. et al [16] Catalytic effect of n-Fe 2 O 3 & rGO-Fe 2 O 3 was observed on the thermal decomposition of CL-20/HMX cocrystal by Wu et al [17] Danali et al [18] discussed in his review about use of Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles in delay/priming composition and in green pyrotechnics.…”

“…Of course, due to the use of organic binders or a system of several oxidants, at least one of which can decompose at a temperature lower than the reaction temperature in the solid state, the term is also used for mixtures generating less than 10 mL of gaseous products per 1 g of mixture [ 7 ]. Several pyrotechnic mixtures have been proposed in recent years that meet these conditions (e.g., Ti/C-3Ni/Al [ 8 ], Fe/BaO 2 [ 9 ], Sb/KMnO 4 [ 10 ]). Unfortunately, the high ignition temperature and high heat losses due to the dissipation of energy through the walls of the time delay element make many gasless mixtures impractical due to the possibility of stopping the combustion wave.…”

“…Delay compositions systems as fuses and electro explosive devices are a safe starting trigger for different applications as rocket launching systems and space industry [1,2]. Different types (gassy and gasless) delay compositions are mainly used to transfer the ignition from one stage to another at preordained time [3]. Simplicity in structure and low production cost makes delay compositions widely used in different military and civilian products [4].…”
