Study of in vivo brain glioma in a mouse model using continuous-wave terahertz reflection imaging

Abstract: We demonstrated that in vivo brain glioma in a mouse model using a continuouswave terahertz reflection imaging system, as well as the ex vivo fresh brain tissues in mouse model. The tumor regions of in vivo and ex vivo brain tissues can be well distinguished by THz intensity imaging at the frequency of 2.52THz. The THz images with high sensitivity correlated well with magnetic resonance, visual and hematoxylin and eosin stained images. Furthermore, the THz spectral difference between brain gliomas and normal b… Show more

“…[38,39] In order to characterize the diffusion kinetics of the considered IOC hyperosmotic agents, flat specimens of brain tissues ex vivo from white laboratory rats with the weight of 200 to 250 g were used. Selection of such tissue type for studying the IOC kinetics is due to the increasing attention to THz technology applications in the intraoperative neurodiagnosis, [13,15,40] which strongly require enhancement of the penetration depth of THzwave in brain tissues. The animals were decapitated under isoflurane anesthesia, and the rat brains were immediately resected and placed in phosphate buffered saline (PBS).…”

“…The research on THz biological imaging has been used in various medical fields, such as dermatology and oncology (Sim et al, 2013;Woodward et al, 2003;Reid et al, 2011;Park et al, 2017). In the field of neurosurgery, investigations of gliomas using THz spectrum and THz reflection imaging have also been reported for post-processed, fresh ex vivo and in vivo brain tissues (Park et al, 2017;Oh et al, 2014;Meng et al, 2014;Wu et al, 2019). However, reflection imaging is always affected by diffusive reflections because of the uneven surface of the sample.…”

“…Another reason is that THz-wave is sensitive to the distribution of water content and cellular hydration state and THz imaging could indicate the presence of perifocal edema around the tumor region. 20 Considering the high sensitivity of this horizontal-scanning THz-ATR imaging system, the identification of tumor region with smaller size can be facilitated by further improving the image resolution.…”
