Study of Metabolic Adaptation of Red Yeasts to Waste Animal Fat Substrate

Abstract: Carotenogenic yeasts are non-conventional oleaginous microorganisms capable of utilizing various waste substrates. In this work, four red yeast strains (Rhodotorula, Cystofilobasidium, and Sporobolomyces sp.) were cultivated in media containing crude, emulsified, and enzymatically hydrolyzed animal waste fat, compared with glucose and glycerol, as single C-sources. SSF has many advantages over more common submerged fermentation: (1) low energy requirements are accompanied by the high product yield; (2) downstream costs are significantly lower due to the high product applicability; (3) SSF conditions are more favorable for the microbial growth as they resemble the natural environment of microorganisms, resulting in a better performance of the fermentation process; (4) due to the high product/volume productivity of SSF, smaller fermentation volumes are possible [8]; (5) consumption of a lower amount of water and generation of low to almost zero amount of waste [9].
