“…The alkali and silica reaction produces a viscous glass phase that prevents the alkali from penetrating deeper into the refractory material [19]. Our previous research into the alkali resistance of concrete [20,21] showed that the addition of finely ground quartz sand to fireclay castable promotes the formation of a protective glassy layer on the surface of the castable exposed to K 2 CO 3 at 1100 • C.
