Study of molten metal droplet adhesion to organic anti-spatter coatings

Abstract: In this study, the protection mechanism of four typical anti-spatter products based on polymer coating is investigated. These coatings protect the weld nozzle against weld spatter in a similar way as water droplets on a hot plate. During the short contact of the molten metal droplet with the coating, part of the coating evaporates in the form of carbon monoxide, hydrogen, water and other volatile degradation products. During welding, these gases act as a buffer layer between the coating and the weld spatter an… Show more

“…Welding spatter is a common phenomenon in the arc welding process, which reduces the deposition efficiency and the actual welding productivity due to post-weld cleaning [1][2][3]. In recent years, the types and properties of welding anti-spatter sprays have been constantly updated, and all the common anti-spatter sprays can be divided into oil-based sprays and water-based sprays [4].…”

“…It makes sense to expand the area of using the unique properties of these materials in mechanical engineering, particularly, in the manufacture of welded metal structures. The main disadvantages of the open-arc welding are increased spitting of molten electrode metal and drippings pickup on the welding surface [12][13][14][15]. At the contact point of the molten metal dripping with the outer surface of the product metal, there is a small area in which the material of the product is heated to high temperatures.…”

“…Laser cladding [3][4][5] is an effective and feasible technique to improve the surface properties. This method is provided with the advantages of smaller thermal stress and even more uniform microstructure compared with other technologies [6][7][8]; therefore, laser cladding is a popular technology to enhance material surface performance.…”
