Study of MRPC performance at different temperatures

Abstract: Since 2013, Muon Tomography technology has been developed at Tsinghua University. We have built up a prototype system named THUMTY (Tsinghua University cosmic ray Muon tomography facility) to do elementary research. Our research is focused on developing a muon NDT (Non Destructive Testing) system that will be used in homeland security operations such as custom inspections, airport security and so on. This muon NDT system is based on the MRPC (Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber) technology, thus the impact of th… Show more

“…The dark current of SMRPC stays at a low value during the whole test, which shows that our detector works at a low noise level. Since the temperature usually influences the detector working performance dramatically [14], the temperature in our test is recorded and it didn't show any significant fluctuation. As shown in figure 7, we tested the SMRPC for one month at 0.5 ml/min gas flow and the detector efficiency is usually higher than 92%.…”

“…Thus, the idea of "effective voltage" V e f f is given to describe the relationship V e f f = V app × T T re f × P re f P (10) where V app is the applied high voltage, T and P are the actual temperature and pressure, T re f and P re f are the reference values. The efficiency versus the high voltage at different temperatures [109] is reported in Figure 17b. The working voltage varies at different temperatures.…”

“…A schematic diagram of the system used to study temperature effects on MRPC performance is shown in figure 6. A cosmic ray test system was placed in a temperature-controlled box [22]. The performance of the MRPC was studied using both the so-called the "standard" gas mixture (Freon/SF 6 /isobutane:90%;5%;5%) and pure Freon gas…”
