“…Steady-state permeate fluxes were reached after 300 and 200 min of continuous operation for the batch concentration mode and feed-and-bleed mode, respectively. By referring to the feed-and-bleed operation mode the high flux value confirms the results obtained by using pre-treated OMWWs according to the methodology reported in Bazzarelli et al [21]. Indeed, a constant flux of 60 L/h m 2 was maintained after 480 min of processing.…”

“…Indeed, a constant flux of 60 L/h m 2 was maintained after 480 min of processing. It is noticeable that this result has been obtained using a membrane module with a membrane surface area (0.35 m 2 ) 194 times higher than the one (18 cm 2 ) used in Bazzarelli et al [21]. These data demonstrated the easy scale-up of the MF process for large scale OMWWs processing.…”

“…OMW was first centrifuged (Eppendorf 5804, Hamburg, Germany) for 30 min at 4000 rpm in order to separate the remaining solid particles, obtaining a liquid phase with a pH value of 4.85 (GLP-21 pH-meter, Crison, Barcelona, Spain). Afterwards, based on the method described by Bazzarelli et al [ 41 ], acidification with HCl (37%) was performed by 0.003% ( v / w ) addition to reach pH = 1.8. After 24 h, the pretreated OMW was used in a two-stage membrane treatment process including ultrafiltration (UF) followed by nanofiltration (NF).…”

“…As reported in a recent study [ 26 ], the further acidification causes a destabilization of the suspension by modifying the zeta potential with subsequent easier flocculation of suspended solids.…”
