Study of papillary carcinoma of thyroid with uncommon sites of metastasis

Abstract: Papillary carcinoma of thyroid (PCT) is the most common type of thyroid malignancy and metastasis to cervical lymph nodes is very common [1]. Blood borne metastases from PCT are less frequent than with the other thyroid carcinomas [2]. Uncommon sites include lungs, bone, atrium, cerebrum, kidney, skin [3].We report four cases of papillary carcinoma with uncommon sites of metastasis. One showed tumor emboli of 2.5 cm in internal jugular vein, one had tumor deposit in metacarpal bone and lung, one had a subcutane… Show more

“… 2 Since then, only a few cases of thyroid carcinoma with a tumour thrombus in the jugular vein have been reported. 2,4 Tumour thrombosis of large vessels is frequently observed in tumours with angio-invasive features such as hepatocellular carcinoma involving the portal vein or hepatic vein and renal cell carcinoma involving renal vein or inferior vena cava. 5 Follicular and hurthle cell carcinomas of the thyroid gland also have well documented microscopic characteristics of microinvasion affecting the great cervical veins.…”

“…Local metastases are usually confined to the neck lymph nodes, whereas distal metastases are relatively rare and most often occur in the bones and lungs [1]. Distal metastases to other sites are extremely rare, and less than twenty-five cases of metastatic papillary thyroid cancer to the kidney have been reported in the literature [2]. A case of metastatic thyroid cancer to the kidney and muscle is presented, including the coexisting appearance of a second primary malignancy of nonsmall cell lung cancer.…”
