Study of solid state interactions in the systems ZnFe2O4 - CaO, ZnFe2O4 - MgO and zinc cake with CaO and MgO

Abstract: The solid state interactions of CaO and MgO with synthetic and industrial ZnFe,O^ (in zinc cake) have been studied using chemical, XRD analysis and Mossbauer spectroscopy. The exchange reactions in the systems ZnFe,O^ -CaO and ZnFe,0 -MgO have been investigated in the range of 850-1200 "C and duration up to 180 min. It has been established that Ca-* and Mg" ions exchange Zn-* in ferrite partially and the solubility of zinc in a 7% sulfuric acid solution increases. The possibilities for utilization of the obtai… Show more

“…Peltekov and B.S. Boyanov [40] reported the formation of Ca-Fe-oxides solid solution by calcining at 900-1200°C. The formation of Ti-Fe-oxides solid solution was proved by M. Charilaou et al [41] to be impossible when calcination temperature was lower than 827°C.…”

“…In the third stage, from 470 to 670°C, a mass loss of 1.85% could be attributed to the conversion of ZnS into ZnO, and formation of new phase Fe 2 O 3 . ZnO continues to react with Fe 2 O 3 to form stable ZnFe 2 O 4 , 27–30 while impurities such as sulfur, lead, and arsenic are removed during the firing. The list of zinc sulfide concentrate reactions can be summarized as below: PbS+1.5O2()g=PbO+SO2()g 2PbO+2SO2()g+O2()g=2PbSO4 PbS+2O2()g=PbSO4 ZnS+1.5O2()g=ZnO+SO2()g 2FeS+3.5O2()g=Fe2O3+2SO2()g ZnO+Fe2O3=ZnFe2O4 In the fourth stage (720–1000°C), the mass loss of 2.43% could be attributed to the increase in content of ZnFe 2 O 4 and the formation of a new phase of Zn 2 SiO 4 .…”
