Study of the Anatomical Association between Morton’s Neuroma and the Space Inferior to the Deep Transverse Metatarsal Ligament Using Ultrasound

Abstract: Morton’s neuroma (MN) is a common condition in clinical practice. The compressive etiology is the most accepted, in which compression occurs in the tunnel formed by the adjacent metatarsals, the deep transverse metatarsal ligament (DTML) and the plantar skin. Ultrasound (US) is a reliable method of study. The presence of insufficient space under the DTML may be related to the appearance of MN. Objectives: To verify the relationship between MN and the space under the DTML between the metatarsal heads of the thi… Show more

“…The most probable cause is a constriction at the level of the intermetatarsal ligament, which in most cases is caused by inappropriate weight put on the forefoot. (48,64,65) A recent study by Ruiz-Herrera et al (66) could demonstrate an association between the occurrence of Morton´s Neuroma and a smaller space between the metatarsal heads of the third and the fourth metatarsals and under the deep transverse metatarsal ligament using US.…”

“…Previous studies have confirmed that ultrasound could be employed for the examination and classification of neuromas with high accuracy [ 16 , 17 ]. It has important value in preoperative evaluation, surgical planning and therapeutic US-guided procedures [ 18 ].…”
