The dipole polarizability and adiabatic correlations of atomic ions are related to the energy levels and oscillator strengths of the levels through bracketing inequalities. For systems with a ground state ns 2 1 S 0 , the total oscillator strength is dominated by the unbranched intrashell ns 2 1 S 0-nsnp 1 P o 1 transition, and the remaining oscillator strength can be narrowly bracketed using the f-sum rule. Thus measurements of the lifetime of the lowest resonance transition can be used to specify the polarizabilities and, alternatively, measurements of the polarizabilities can be used to deduce lifetimes. Moreover, isoelectronic regularities in line strengths can be used to obtain a comprehensive database from a small number of precision lifetime determinations. These methods are applied homologously to produce values for polarizabilities and lifetimes for the Mg, Zn, Cd and Hg isoelectronic sequences. To confirm the reliability of these methods, fast ion beam lifetime measurements in P IV were performed using the arbitrarily normalized decay curve (ANDC) method, and a test of the f-sum was made for Ba II, for which precision measurements of both the polarizability and lifetimes exist.

We report on the first detection of the noble gases krypton (Z = 36) and xenon (54) in a white dwarf. About 20 Kr vi-vii and Xe vi-vii lines were discovered in the ultraviolet spectrum of the hot DO-type white dwarf RE 0503−289. The observations, performed with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer, also reveal highly ionized photospheric lines from other trans-iron group elements, namely Ga (31), Ge (32), As (33), Se (34), Mo (42), Sn (50), Te (52), and I (53), from which gallium and molybdenum are new discoveries in white dwarfs, too. For Kr and Xe, we performed an NLTE analysis and derived mass fractions of log Kr = −4.3 ± 0.5 and log Xe = −4.2 ± 0.6, corresponding to an enrichment by factors of 450 and 3800, respectively, relative to the Sun. The origin of the large overabundances is unclear. We discuss the roles of neutron-capture nucleosynthesis in the precursor star and radiation-driven diffusion. It is possible that diffusion is insignificant and that the observed metal abundances constrain the evolutionary history of the star. Its hydrogen deficiency may be the consequence of a late helium-shell flash or a binary white dwarf merger.

A capillary discharge tube was used to record the Xe spectrum in the 400-5500 Å region. A set of 243 lines of the Xe vi spectrum was observed, and 146 of them were classified for the first time. For all known lines, we calculated the weighted oscillator strengths (gf) and weighted transition probabilities (gA) using the configuration interaction in a relativistic Hartree-Fock approach. The energy matrix was calculated using energy parameters adjusted to fit the experimental energy levels. Core polarization effects were taken into account in our calculations. Experimental energy values and calculated lifetimes are also presented for a set of 88 levels. From these levels, 32 were classified for the first time and 33 had their values revised. Our analysis of the 5s5p5d and 5s5p6s configurations was extended in order to clarify discrepancies among previous works.
